Jewelry Display Tips - 10 Successful and Profitable Ways to Display Handcrafted Jewelry

Since starting my handcrafted jewelry business , I've displayed my items at many craft shows, fairs, festivals, home jewelry parties, etc. I often have a show two or three days a week. I have picked up many display ideas along the way. I have, also, had other vendors incorporate my ideas into their own displays.

One of the most important things to remember, is that you want your display to be appealing to the customer. Your jewelry or craft may be beautiful, however, that won't matter if the display doesn't look enticing enough for the potential customer to come take a look.

When it comes to jewelry, I find organization of items is very important. I have seen displays in which other jewelry designers have no particular organization in there presentation. That is their choice. I have had MANY customers comment on how much easier and quicker it is to find what they're looking for when a display is organized.

Here are some tips and ideas for displaying jewelry items:

TIP #1:

-Display jewelry sets together. For instance, I display my chakra jewelry together on one mirror.

TIP #2:

- Display jewelry pieces for each category (ex. necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc.) in the same general area. It will be easier for your customers to locate specific items.

TIP #3:

- Organize bracelets by style, gemstone, color, etc. Whatever seems best for you. I separate my bracelet displays by gemstones. For example: I may have quartz, jade and carnelian bracelets on one display, my awareness bracelets on another, and so on.

TIP #4:

- Earring displays are personal preference. I have seen some designers display their earrings on hanging displays without an earring card, some prefer to hang them on a board display or earring rack, others use a rotating display. I use a rotating earring rack, as it takes up less space and I am able to display over 100 pairs of earrings. I use black flock earring cards to hang my earrings on and I include rubber earring backs with my earrings. This helps to keep the earrings in place on the card and offers the customer an added bonus to the earrings .

TIP #5:

-Be creative when displaying your jewelry pieces. I use black velvet and white leatherette jewelry displays, beveled mirrors and wire jewelry holders. Mirrors are a great way to display your jewelry-they are simple, inexpensive and elegant! I use them to display my featured pieces and jewelry sets. Beveled mirrors can be purchased in a variety of sizes at your local craft store or jewelry supplier.

TIP #6:

- It is not recommended to use flat displays. A lot of shows will not accept a vendor if they have a flat table display. It's just not attractive! It is also recommended to have more than one tier in your display. I use the shelf from an old computer desk. I cover it with a piece of black velvet material and sit it on the back center of my table. It is perfect for displaying my business sign, a few necklace stands and smaller pieces of jewelry.

TIP #7:

-Cover your table! What colors you choose are up to you. However, if you choose a pattern that is too "busy", it may take away from your jewelry. I use black tablecloths when displaying my jewelry. To accent the black color, I use runners or large fabric table napkins in the colors of the season. I'll use rust colors in the fall, red and green in the winter..you get the idea. I also, display inexpensive "props" on my table. I use small wood pumpkins, small candles, clip on ornaments, etc. Make your table appealing to the buyer!

TIP #8:

- Include a business card display on your table. This will promote your business and lead to repeat customers.

TIP#9:

-Make signs. I use tent cards to make it easier for customers to find what they're looking for. I design my own tent cards on the computer using tent card sheets or card stock. I then cut them to the size I want. I label each of my categories with a tent card. For example: "Awareness Bracelets","Men's Jewelry","Children's Jewelry", "Anklets". I also make tent cards labeled with my services. For example: "Custom Orders Available", "Host a Jewelry Party", "Bracelet Lengths Can be Adjusted".

TIP #10

-Make sure you have a business sign. Promote, promote, promote! Make or purchase a sign with your business name, logo and/or description. I have an 8" x 10" sign on my table display ( I designed and printed my own sign out on the computer and put it into a picture frame) and I also have a vinyl sign that hangs in front of my table. If you're interested in a vinyl sign, you can make your own using a vinyl sign kit (available in craft stores) or you can purchase one from a sign company.

It's best to make your display neat and professional, and let your personality reflect on it.

An attractive display will be far more appealing to potential customers. Be creative!

The Celts arrived in Ireland around 500BC and were excellent jewelry makers. They used gold, bronze and silver to create wonderful pieces like bangles, collars, torques and brooches. Between about 2000BC and 500AD Celtic jewelry became extremely popular due to its distinctive style and was traded across Europe.

In these earlier times, jewelry was made for practical reasons such as pinning clothes together. It was also seen as a symbol of status. A form of ancient jewelry did exist before the Celts, but it was only made from teeth, bones, wood and even stones!

Celtic crafted jewelry can be recognised by its spirals, knotwork, animal designs, crosses and symbols like the harp and the shamrock which are emblems of Ireland. (If you really want to get a glimpse of some ancient Celtic jewelry on display, then visit the National Museum of Ireland, Merrion Street in Dublin).

The Irish monks continued the practise of jewelry making and introduced the 'high cross'. The monks were excellent craftsmen, which can be seen in the chalices, jewelry and other artefacts that they made. They created jewelry by pouring melted gold or silver into moulds and while the metal was cooling they would carve intricate designs into it. The monks had to be extremely patient and skilled for one slip of the hand could destroy hours of work.

A Fake Diamond Or Real Diamond - How Do You Know?

Before we get too far, I do need to say that the term "fake diamond" is not technically correct from a Gemologist's point of view. Any term that ends with the word "diamond" must be an actual diamond... such as synthetic diamond, man-made diamond, or clarity-enhanced diamond. If a gemstone that just looks like a diamond but it really is something totally different, then the term that must be used is a "diamond simulant" because it simulates a diamond. In this article, and only in this article, I will use the term fake diamond because it gives more of an impact.

It's been going on for a long time!

Hundreds of years ago, fake diamonds were made out of glass, and commonly referred to as "paste", this is the Italian term given to it because the molten glass had to have the consistency of pasta before it was pressed into the molds that formed the shape. There have been many other "fake diamonds" over the years but recently they have gotten really, really good.

A good gemstone gone bad....

According to the dictionary, fake has the same meaning as counterfeit. What changes a diamond simulant to go to the "dark side of the force" and become a fake diamond is the addition of the human emotion of greed. The diamond simulants by themselves are fine, actually I've seen some terrific pieces of jewelry made with Synthetic Cubic Zirconia or Synthetic Moissanite. The greed comes in when one person convinces another person that what they are looking at is a real diamond and that the diamond could be bought at a very good price.... and the seller will say that these inexpensive diamonds are only available now.... "this great deal is going away and you need to act right now!". You can get them right now because the seller is in real need of cash... or because the seller is so well connected into the jewelry business that they know how and where to buy diamonds, and in the process they "cut out the middle man" in order to get the best deals!

Many times the main reason that a diamond simulant can be passed off as a real diamond is because the buyer already has the belief that diamonds are overpriced, are a waste of money, are a rip off, and maybe the buyer really doesn't want to buy a diamond but needs to buy a diamond... so this leaves the buyer open to a seller who comes along and tells the buyer that a whole bunch of money can be saved by buying what "looks just like the real thing".

Diamond simulants have their place in the jewelry business. They are a good inexpensive choice for earrings, a pendant, or a pin. However, a clarity-enhanced diamond should also be something that you should consider for these types of jewelry. A diamond will always outshine any simulant I've ever seen!

Yeah, yeah... but how can you tell? Come on give me the magic test!

On the Internet, I have seen a lot of articles and videos on how to test if you have real or fake diamonds.... the same 6 lame "tests" have been regurgitated over and over again! And all of this fantasy about testing a diamond started with an overly self-promoting bonehead that published a book full of misinformation about diamonds! Only a very few people would be able to tell if a stone was a real diamond or a fake diamond by using these tests! And some of the tests could be destructive. The gemstones that look like diamonds that have been developed in the past 30 years are certainly impressive!

I remember when CZ (synthetic cubic zirconia) was first put on the market in the mid 70s, there were some jewelers who were running around crying that the end of the world was upon us. CZs are really not that difficult to separate from diamonds and Synthetic Moissanite is even easier. The best test is to look at the stone using 10X magnification, but you do need to know what you are looking at! In most jewelry stores, they have "easy to use" electronic testing devices developed to help in separating the simulants from the real thing. Sometimes it is difficult to know for sure when it comes to very small stones by just looking at them.

I love inclusions!

Diamond inclusions, the fun little things that are included inside of your diamond, are always nice to see. Not only does it give your diamond some character!... it will immediately help identify the stone as being a real diamond. Inclusions can be like a fingerprint and if you remember what your inclusions look like; you will be able to recognize your diamond just like you'd be able to recognize an old friend.

Maybe the only test that could be of any use is when you place the stone over some fine print and if you can see the text through the stone it may or may not be a diamond. So if you need to know if it is a diamond, go get a phone book, (plenty of fine print in there!) turn to the yellow pages, now look up a good local jewelry store, go visit them and if you ask nicely, they might be able to give you a "real or fake diamond" answer.

I purchased this set as a gift for my wife, after being disappointed with the Single Strand 18 Inch 7-8mm White Freshwater Cultured Pearl Necklace. Although the two necklaces cost about the same, the difference between the two is like night and day.

The necklace in this set had pearls that were all round or near-round (you really need to examine the pearls closely to see ones that don't look round), and you could tell that the best pearls are in the front, while flawed pearls are near the clasp. The color of the pearls were surprisingly consistent, and well-matched throughout the strand.

As far as flaws go, they're definitely there, and you don't need to look too hard to see them -- but again, the pearls like that were all by the clasp. Granted, this isn't very helpful if the wearer has short hair, but otherwise, nobody would know they're there.

I wasn't fortunate enough to get this when it was in the Gold Box or Lightning Deal, but at Amazon's normal price, it's still a very good value.

My only real gripe is that everything arrives in a small pouch. I would have liked a better presentation for gift giving, but for the quality you get at this price, it's hard to complain.

Store lighting is critical today and is becoming more important as time passes because of the aging Baby Boomer population. This is however, but one important consideration in lighting your store. So here are some more retail store lighting tips.

If your store offers general merchandise, let's say hardware, groceries or variety merchandise, then the high light levels referred to above are spot on (no pun intended). In fact light levels in the range of 75-150 fc are recommended for maximum visibility. Maintain light levels in even the lower level of this recommended spectrum and your store will appeal to us seniors. There are a number of light fixtures on the market today that can produce these levels of illumination and do so efficiently.

Gold Jewelry Hallmarking Secrets Revealed

We should be familiar with the BASIC hallmarks mentioned on the website. It might pay you to read them again, just to bring you up to speed and ensure you have grasped the principles. If you have not yet had the chance to read them please go to the website listed below.

Let's quickly remind ourselves where we should be regarding Hallmarks.

The first three marks mentioned before were:

1: The Makers mark

2: The Assay Office mark

3: The Quality mark

And that brings us to the last mark...

4: The Date stamp.

Please note that more mistakes are made with this mark than any other.

This is caused by two reasons.

The first: because 26 letters can only be used for 26 years (a different one for each year, although they did use italics or capitals for a change). So in order to extend their use, they changed the shape of the stamp mark itself.

One series of 26 years may use a Shield shape, while the next 26 years may use a square shape with the corners trimmed off. Go figure?

And second: because humans being humans, (and contrary to common belief, Jewelers are Human), a manufacturer who lived in Birmingham had to use one shape of stamp, while jewelers in London had to use another shape.

All very good, you say, until a jeweler who USED to live in London went to Birmingham to work and took all his old tools and stamps with him, and couldn't be bothered (they cost money) to buy a new set. So he used his old set....

Ahhh... Life is never simple.

However; and in general terms, if all else fails use common sense.

As London was the Largest and most common stamp, you may find a Birmingham mark with a slightly wrong date stamp, although the date YEAR mark should be the same.

By using all of the marks together and taking into account the wear and look of the item - plus what it is, you should get fairly close to accurate.

If your still not sure, get a written valuation done with your local professional Jewelry Appraiser, and use that piece of paper as fact.

Even though YOU know, they are going through the same process of 'Dating' it's still a little confusing. Plus it's not the only form of Dating I get confused with...? And my plastic eyeglass doesn't help at all....

Look out for these tips next time you're spying with your eyeglass.

HALLMARKING TIPS #1:

In Circa 1821 the Leopard's Head Hallmark became 'Uncrowned'
In Circa 1891 Queen Victoria's head was no longer used in Hallmarking.
The major point is to use ALL of the Hallmarks, not just the date letter.
Also check the style of an item, as this could give a clue to the period.

HALLMARKING TIPS #2:

As a general rule, Hallmarks should be assessed by going from the 'Big Picture' to the 'Small Picture' or the particular date in question.

For example: Date the article within a 25 year time span first, as this can be calculated from the overall 'SHAPE' or style of the stamp mark (Shield or Oval etc). Then go to the actual 'Year' stamp mark.

Remember, these can sometimes be wrong, but if we are in the ballpark, so to speak, we won't be too far out.

It is interesting to note that the expression 'Circa' or 'c' actually means 'around'...

Silver imported into England carried the 'F' mark (for Foreign) between 1883 - 1904.

HALLMARKING TIPS #3:

It is helpful if we can remember some of the more important changes to Hallmarking and just how that effected Quality.

For example:
The quality of Hallmarked Gold can give us a clue regarding its age.
Items of 22ct stamped with the 'Lion passant' were made up to 1844.
After that date items were stamped 22ct with a 'Crown' hallmark.

HALLMARKING TIPS #4:

UKHM stands for the United Kingdom Hall Marks and has been in existence since 1300. Yes... 1300!

The basic marks are:

The Assay Mark which indicated the 'Guarantee of Quality'.

The Origin Mark which shows WHERE it was Assayed.

The Duty Mark to confirm 'Tax' had been paid.

The Maker's Mark to indicate the company or individual who made the item.

The Date Mark based on the letters of the Alphabet, changing each year.

The Assay year was NOT a Calendar year as it began (as for London) in May. That means it covered TWO Calendar years.

How pearls are formed

A pearl is the result of an oyster or mollusks’ reaction to an irritant that invades its shell. To try to protect itself, the mollusk secretes a crystalline substance called nacre which builds up in layers upon layers, surrounding the irritant. When this happens, a pearl is born.

Pearls have been cultured for centuries not just in Japan, but in other countries as well. Much of the products result to semispherical pearls, also called mabe pearls from the oyster that grew them, and not in the more coveted spherical pearls. It was Kokichi Mikimoto who developed a special technique to induce oysters to create a round pearl.

The man behind the name

Cultured pearls as we know them, owe a lot to Kokichi Mikimoto, the man who perfected the pearl culturing method that is still used today. Contrary to popular belief, he did not invent the industry although he did play a very significant role in advancing the techniques which contributed to the improvement in cultured pearl quality.

Mikimoto, the son of a noodle restaurant owner, was born in 1885 in Toba City, Japan. He was first introduced to pearls when he started raising oysters. Around this time, Japan was already trading pearls with other countries and pearl oysters were in danger of becoming over-harvested. Mikimoto decided to concentrate on experiments in seeding oysters and producing pearls.

The first endeavors were failures. Mikimoto and his colleagues repeatedly encountered disappointing results, due in part to uncontrollable factors like water temperature and red tide. But this did nothing to dissuade Mikimoto from his dream.

His efforts paid off eventually. On July 11, 1893, with his wife Ume, he discovered a beautiful pearl in one of his oysters. He never looked back since. By the time he died in 1954, the highly honored Mikimoto had successfully advocated and promoted cultured pearls and opened markets all over the world. Today, his name is synonymous to the highest quality cultured pearls.

Buying your Mikimoto pearl necklace

Pearl necklaces come in several lengths. From the shortest to the longest, they are: collar (10”-13”), choker (14”-16”), princess (18”-20”), matinee (20”-24”), opera (28”-34”) and rope (37” and longer). The length of the pearl necklace will depend on the woman’s age, body composition and neck size, although an 18 to 24-inch pearl necklace is a good length for anyone. Generally speaking, the longer the necklace, the more it ‘elongates’ the neck.

The mark of “M”

Every jewelry created by Mikimoto including pearl necklaces, has an “M” stamped on its setting. This is a guarantee of quality. However, in some cases, the mark of “M” will only guarantee that the setting is genuine and not the pearls, which can be replaced and restrung.

A caveat: there is a black market for Mikimoto clasps, where original Mikimoto clasps are used for cheaper or imitation-quality pearls. Beware also of ‘closeout’ Mikimoto sales, even if they come in ‘new’ 18k gold.

The best way to distinguish a true high-quality Mikimoto pearl from other pearls is to look for a unique road map or line pattern on the surface of the pearls under a 10x magnifying lens. Experienced jewelers can recognize this. On your own, you will want to find genuine Mikimoto pearls to compare with your intended purchase. Once you see the difference, true Mikimoto pearls are easily recognizable.

You might also encounter pearl necklaces that are labeled ‘Mikimoto quality’. This is misleading. These are not pearls produced under the patented Mikimoto process. True Mikimoto pearl necklaces are those produced under stringent conditions in Ise in Honshu, Japan.

Akoya vs. Mikimoto

Another fine quality pearl is akoya pearls, although this is a general term used to refer to saltwater pearls. These are not Mikimoto pearls and they don’t cost the same.

Grading method

Mikimoto pearls are rated using four grades, with AAA being the highest. There are 4 sub-grades starting with AAA1. Highest-grade pearls are those with the best luster and reflective quality, almost mirror-like, while lower-grade pearls are those with reasonably clear reflection.

When buying your Mikimoto pearl necklace, be sure to ask for grading certificates. This is not only good for insurance, but it is also a guarantee that what you are paying for is a true Mikimoto pearl necklace.

How To Bead A Peyote Stitch...

Step 1. Thread on a top bead

Step 2. Thread on 7 more beads

Step 3. Thread another bead and then thread your needle through the 3rd bead from the end.
Pull the thread so that the new bead sits on top of the 8th bead of the first row.

Step 4. Thread another bead and then thread your needle through the 4th bead from the end of the first row.

Step 5. Repeat Step 4, 2 more times, weaving the thread through every other bead on the first row.
You will end the second row with the thread going through the stop bead. (your first bead).
You should have added 4 new beads.

Step 6. Now, lets continue with a third row...
Thread another bead and then thread your needle through the first bead on the second row.
Pull the thread so that the new bead sits on top of the stop bead

Step 7. Thread another bead and then thread your needle through the next bead on the second row.

Materials to make a hemp necklace.

Step 1. Cut your hemp cord.
a) Cut two cords that are 5 feet 8 inches in length. This is going to be your knotting cord.
Tip - I don't whip out a tape measure every time I need to measure my hemp. I measure it against myself. I pull it out to the width of both my arms spread to their max and cut it their. It's much quicker than measuring it with a tape measure.
b) Cut one thread or thin cord that is 2 feet 10 inches in length. This is going to be your center string. If you are using beads the will go on this string so make sure they fit. I measure it from my finger tips to my neck.
Tip - I like to use more hemp than I need. It's always easier to cut a little bit off than to fix the necklace if their isn't enough.
Step 2. Starting out.
a) Take the two knotting cords they are the thicker and longer cords and tie them together using an over hand knot. To do an over hand knot make a loop go threw the loop and pull tight.
b) Take the shorter thinner center string and both knotting cords and tie them together using an over hand knot two inches from where you made your first over hand knot.
c) Braid all three cords together for about 2 inches. Then tie them off with an over hand knot.
Step 3. Add beads.
a) Add the beads you want to use.
Tip - If it's hard to push the center string threw the beads because they have small holes. Place a drop of general purpose glue on your index finger then position the center string on the glue 4 inches from the end and pinch in place with your thumb. Then pull the string threw your thumb and index finger distributing glue along the final four inches of length. If some areas are still dry repeat. Hang the glued end in the air to dry for thirty minutes to an hour or until hard.
Step 4. Macrame.
Tip - The knots are much quicker and easier to tie if the center string is tight. So I take the loop that I created in step two and put it on a shower ring then I attach the shower ring to a hook or wall. I then take the center string and tie it to one of the belt loops on my pants.
a) Take your two knotting cords. Pull them to opposite sides of the center string.
The basic knot is called a square knot. It can be started from the left or from the right.
Their are two designs that can be created spiral and flat.
The flat design is created when you alternate your knots. Left, right, left, right or right, left, right, left.
The spiral design is created when you tie the same knot. Left, left, left, left or right, right, right, right.
It doesn't matter which knot you start with it matters which knot you follow up with.
Tying a left knot.
a) To tie a square knot starting on the left you take the cord on the left and lay it over the center string creating a loop on the left.
b) Next take the cord on the right and go over the left cord then under the center string and up threw the loop on the left of the center string.
c) Pull tight.
Tying a square knot starting on the right involves the same process started on the right side of the necklace.
When you are ready for a bead move the bead up behind the last knot you tied then tie your next knot on the other side of the bead.
Continue tying knots and adding beads until you get to your desired length.
I usually stop a necklace when the macrame and bead portion is long enough to stretch around my neck and touch ends.
Finish the macrame portion of the necklace by tying all three cords together in an over hand knot.
Step 5 finishing the hemp necklace.
a) Braid all three cords together for about 2 inches. Then tie them off with an over hand knot.
b) Cut off the remaining length of the center string.
c) Take the two knotting cords and tie them together using an over hand knot.
d) Cut off any remaining length and you are done.
Tip - The braided portion and loop on the end is for tying it off. You give them 4 inches of braid and four inches of loop so that they can tie it off to the length they desire and dispose of the rest.

We just placed an order for this pendant as a last minute holiday gift, but we have allready received 3 matching ones in blue topaz, Created Ruby and garnet for my sisters for the holidays... and we loved them so much that we oerdered this one for my Mom! The gem is just stunning. Very brilliant, clear, great color and quite large. The diamond is not a chip. White, bright and very clean. We loved the style, is classic and very elegant. The size overall is just perfect, not too small and the stone itself makes a great statement. What really impressed us was the "grand" presentation. The free gift packaging looks expensive and makes it really an impressive gift with no need to wrap. We got a free chain with the pendant... a bit thin but looks very well made. The Four c's & Valuation
The four c's stand for color, clarity, cut & carat. These are the parameters used when valuing a diamond and various other precious stones.
For now, we will concentrate on diamonds as these are the most popular of all gemstones.
Color refers to the tint or shade of the stone. The clearer the stone, the greater the value. Most people look on diamonds as being expensive clear see-through objects. We all know that diamonds are expensive. Clear and see-through however is on the whole not the case. Practically all diamonds used in jewelry will have faint, barely visible yellow or brown tints. To determine the affect the color has on the value of a stone; the D-Z Color Grading Scale was developed, with D being colorless and Z being light yellow.
Clarity or clearness represents the amount of flaws or blemishes on the surface of, or inside the stone. The rule is, the fewer flaws a stone has, the more expensive it will be. The Gemological Institute of America, GIA grades clarity in the following manner:
(fl) Flawless; Shows no inclusions or blemishes of any sort under 10X magnification when observed by an experienced grader.
(if) Internally Flawless; Has no inclusions when examined by an experienced grader using 10X magnification, but will have some minor blemishes.
(vvs1 and vvs2) Very Very Slightly Included; Contains minute inclusions that are difficult even for experienced graders to see under 10X magnification.
(vs1 and vs2) Very Slightly Included; Contains minute inclusions such as small crystals, clouds, or feathers when observed with effort under 10X magnification.
(si1 and si2) Slightly Included; Contains inclusions (clouds, included crystals, knots, cavities, and feathers) that are noticeable to an experienced grader under 10X magnification.
(i1, i2, i3) Included; Contains inclusions (possibly large feathers or large included crystals) that are obvious under 10X magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance.
Our advice to both dealers and consumers is to look for jewelry pieces with diamonds of SI1 and SI2 or VS1 and VS2 clarity. The cost of anything above VS2 is prohibitive and you are likely to get complaints if you offer pieces with diamonds of I1-I3 standard.
Cut refers to the finish or the shape and style of the diamond. There are many different cuts; the most popular in our experience is the brilliant or round cut.
Carat is the term used to express the weight of a diamond. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. The weight measurement for smaller diamonds is often referred to as points with one hundred points making up one carat.
Valuation. Large diamonds are rare and consequently more sought after than smaller stones of the same quality. The added demand affects the value and therefore a larger stone can attract a higher price. A solitaire ring for example with a one carat stone will almost always be more expensive than a ring with say, three stones making up one or even more than one carat. This is where something we refer to as carat levels becomes relevant. Stones of 9/10ths of a carat rather than one carat or 1.90 carat instead of two carat are normally less expensive.
Tip When you buy a piece of diamond jewelry, always aim for just under the next full carat. There is no visible difference when the stone is set but there are big savings in cost.
